Yesterday we buried one of the men I have admired and loved my whole life—my Dad. It is hard to put into words what this man means to me. My Dad was not the type of person that needed to be the center of attention or the one who wanted all the credit. Instead, my father was the person you knew who would always be there for you no matter what. He was the rock and foundation of our family. My Dad was the type of person that set a high standard and expected no more from us then he did for himself. I must have heard a million times “if you are going to do something, then give it your all and hold your head high”.
My Dad worked from the time he was 7 years old during the depression years selling eggs and dairy at his father’s stand at the Westside Market in Cleveland. He was a Marine and later became an electrical engineer. There wasn’t much that he could not fix. Family was very important to my Dad and he loved us all in his own way—his legacy will live on through his 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
So Dad, I want to say thank you for all you have done for me and for making me the person that I am today. Until we meet again, I want to close with the words from Taps:
Day is done, Gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hill,
From the sky.
All is well, Safely rest,
God is nigh.
