I knew Joanne and the Hempel family since I was around 5 - that makes it well over 60 years. We all go back to Menlo Road in Shaker. Joanne was a true friend in every respect. There aren't adequate words to describe her many qualities and accomplishments. Joanne came several times to participate in lunch time forums I had for students in the middle school where I taught. Her 'ask the doc sessions' were both educational and meaningful to adolescents. I heard more than one student say, 'I wish she were my doc'. Regrettably, I'll be unable to pay my respects as I am out of the country, but her memory is a blessing to all that had the privilege of knowing her.

I was privileged to work with this special lady for over 30 years-first during her internship at Metro, then for many years at Pediatric Services. Her compassion and kindness was shown to not only her patients, but to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She genuinely cared. My condolences to her much loved family.

I will sorely miss this beautiful and kind woman! Aside from the fact that she was a great pediatrician to my sons, she also helped me get my job as a nurse at Pediatric Services for 25 years and she was great to work with in taking care of kids ( and their parents ) We were also friends and shared a love of gardening plus she was an amazing quilter. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and also the many lives she touched in her time here on earth...
