Charles D. Cline's Obituary
Charles D. Cline (David), passed away peacefully in the care of Southwest General Hospice Angels on November 30, 2018 surrounded by family. He was 97 years old. Born to Charles C. and Ruth J. He served during WWII in the US Army in the South Pacific. Shortly after the War was over he married Vivian M in 1946 and enjoyed 72 years of wedded bliss and loving care from his wife and personal RN.
After marrying at Lakeside, Ohio, David and his wife moved to Cleveland where he attended college on the GI bill. A 1951 Graduate of Fenn College of Engineering he began his professional career in Mt. Gilead, Ohio at HPM. In 1961 he took a job in Wayne, MI at Garwood Industries making plastic injection molding machines. In 1973 he moved his family to Northeast Ohio for a position at Van Dorn. He was most proud of becoming the company’s product safety engineer. He traveled coast to coast to testify in court on behalf of Van Dorn, sometimes taking his wife with him so they could enjoy vacationing together.
In August, 1989 David and Vivian retired together and toured the US by car visiting the entire contiguous United States. David often said he wanted to see all the sights that he only got to see from an airplane window while he was working.
In 1980, David had triple bypass surgery for significant heart disease. He changed his diet and began exercising regularly. His RN wife, Vivian, helped him stay healthy over the years. He often attributed his longevity to having married a nurse (because he knew she would take care of him) and to the best cardiac care in the US that he received at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Russel Raymond was his Cardiologist for years and Vivian related to Dr. Raymond as if he was a son.
Those who knew David, knew he often presented as a curmudgeon or a cranky old man. What many did not know was there was a charming side to him that became more obscure as he lost his ability to hear. Even with the most technologically advanced hearing aids he was barely able to hear most people. As a result, he became more and more isolated except to his immediate family who always did their best to translate for him.
Father of Charles B., William D. (Miriam), Rebecca A. (Dave Butler), and Elizabeth J. (John McBratney). Grandfather of Erika E., Lisa A. (Matt Brown), Thomas, Heather Emery (Craig), Becca Butler, Indra, and Kumar Brunhart-McBratney. Great grandfather of Naomi and Avery.
A private memorial service will be held at some time in the future. He will be inurned with his wife upon her passing in the Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield, Ohio. Please make donations to your local Hospice or to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he gave the ultimate gift of his body for research.
