Dr. Angel Lopez-Candales' Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dr. Angel
Lopez-Candales, 64 years of age, on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Cleveland Clinic
Hospital.
Dr. Angel Lopez-Candales was born on September 3, 1960, in Havana, Cuba to
the late Angel Lopez Garcia and Maria Dolores Lopez Castro. He earned his medical
degree in 1986 from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He completed
his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Veterans Affairs Caribbean
Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He completed a research fellowship and
a clinical fellowship, both in cardiology, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital of St. Louis
through the Washington University School of Medicine.
Over his 39-year career, he held various positions across numerous medical
facilities including Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, State University of New York in
Buffalo, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the University of Cincinnati Medical
Center, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences Medical Center, Truman Medical Center part of University of Missouri Kansas
City, and the Dayton VA Medical Center.
Dr. Angel Lopez-Candales was a cherished father to his son Gabriel Lopez-
Candales and daughter Ashley Barlak; along with her husband Matthew Barlak. He
shared his life and love with his devoted wife Hilda Lopez-Candales of 39 years. He
also leaves behind a granddaughter, Olivia Grace Barlak. He was a mentor to many
medical interns and fellows, which have grown into lifelong friendships.
In reflecting upon his life, we remember Dr. Angel Lopez-Candales not only for
his love of family but also for the countless hours put into his life’s work of helping
others, along with his research and medical journal publications. His legacy will forever
be etched in our hearts.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Jardine Funeral Home
from 3pm-7pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at St.
Ambrose Catholic Parish at 10am with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu
of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Cancer Society Hope
Lodge in Cleveland as a tribute to his memory. Your presence and support during this
difficult time is greatly appreciated.
