Nazareth "Nat" Arslanian's Obituary
Nazareth “Nat” Arslanian, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2018, in North Olmsted, Ohio. He was born on December 12, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio to Arslan (“Leo”) and Zaruhe (“Sarah”) Arslanian.
Nat grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio in 1944. After high school he attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1950. From 1944 to 1945, his college studies were interrupted as he enlisted in the Army and served during and after WWII. He became a commissioned Second Lieutenant and served as part of the Allied Occupation in Europe following the end of WWII. He was proud to be American, to serve in the military and be a WWII Veteran. After the war, he began and sustained a long career in management in the insurance industry that included employment at John Hancock in Cleveland, Ohio, E. St. Louis, Illinois, and Dayton, Ohio, and Sun Life in Baltimore, Maryland, eventually leading to the creation of his own financial services firm, Chagrin Valley Insurance Agency in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Nat married Mary Kaprelian in 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio, and was happily married for 66 years. Nat was an active member and leader in The Rotary Club International, Beachwood Chapter, and St. Gregory of Narek Armenian Church in Richmond Heights, Ohio, and participated in many events honoring WWII veterans in his later years. He enjoyed golfing, driving cross-country with family, playing cards and socializing at the casino with his sisters and others, discussing politics and watching C-span. His greatest joy, however was spending time with his family, particularly mentoring his children and grandchildren throughout his life. He particularly appreciated “The Turn” (formerly the Return to Golf program), which enabled him to enjoy the game into his late 80’s. The Turn is an Ohio non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of people with physical disabilities through adaptive fitness and recreational programs.
Nat is survived by his beloved wife Mary (nee Kaprelian); his sons Charles and George of Jacksonville, Florida; daughters Cheryl (Jim Gideon) of North Olmsted, Ohio and Lucine King (Ken) of Moorestown, New Jersey; sisters Anne Abdalian Tarkanian (Charles) of Northridge, California and Betty Cimoroni (Carmen) of Mayfield Hts., Ohio; grandchildren Melanie Kugel (Josh) of Buffalo, New York, Valerie Gideon, of Lakewood, Ohio; Shannon King and Robert Nazareth King; and many nieces and nephews
Nat was preceded in death by his brother Leonard Arslanian and granddaughter Taline King.
