Michael D. Kalinich Sr., a cherished pillar of the Strongsville community and a loving family man, passed away on September 14, 2024. His life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, his business, and his community, leaving behind a legacy of service and strength.
Family was the cornerstone of Michael's world. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Erma J., for 70 years, a loving father to Michael D. Jr., Cynthia (Christie) DeRosa, and Kimberly Kalinich-Zacharyasz, and a caring brother to the late Mollie and Martha. His role as a grandfather brought him immense joy, as he shared his wisdom and love with grandchildren Michael III, Clinton, the late Daniel, Christopher (Kelli), Michael (Jessica), James (Alicia), Annie, and Anthony. His legacy continues through his 8 great-grandchildren, who will grow up with stories of their great grandfather's kindness and strength. Michael's role as an uncle and great uncle was cherished by many, as his guidance and support reached far beyond his immediate family.
Born into a lineage of entrepreneurship, Michael carried on the family business with great pride, bringing it to Strongsville in 1956. The business, a cornerstone of the community since 1905, thrived under his leadership and continues to operate in the city that he loved so deeply. His innovative spirit led him to coin the phrase "Crossroads of the Nation," a moniker that has become synonymous with Strongsville, capturing the essence of the city's vibrant character and strategic location. Michael put the “Strong” in Strongsville.
Michael's commitment to his community was unparalleled. As President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Board of Strongsville Savings Bank, he played a pivotal role in shaping the local economy. His expertise was further recognized through his service as a Board Trustee at Fifth Third Bank. For three decades, he dedicated himself as a Board Member of Southwest General Hospital, where his contributions were invaluable. His passion for community service shone brightest as a founding member of the Strongsville City Club and as Chairman of the Strongsville Homecoming, where his efforts brought joy and celebration to countless residents.
In addition to his civic endeavors, Michael proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War. His bravery and patriotism were hallmarks of his character, qualities that he carried into every aspect of his life.
Michael’s life was a testament to the power of community, hard work, and family. His influence will continue to be felt in Strongsville and beyond, as those who knew him strive to uphold the values he embodied. His memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with this remarkable man.
Friends and loved ones are invited to honor this remarkable life at JARDINE FUNERAL HOME, 15822 Pearl Road, Strongsville, on Thursday, September 19th from 2-7 PM.
A funeral service to celebrate Michael's legacy will be held at the funeral home on Friday September 20th at 10AM. Following the service, Michael will be laid to rest at Strongsville Cemetery.
