Matthew Sokany's Obituary
Matthew Francis Sokany, age 85, passed away February 20th at home in Matthews, North Carolina surrounded by his family. Matthew was born June 1, 1932 in New York City. He spent time in Europe with the U.S. Army following the Korean War. He returned to the states where he received his degree from Manhattan College and, soon thereafter, married his beloved wife Ann. Matt and Ann were married for 58 years and, after moving to Strongsville in 1993, they became heavily involved in the parish community of St. Joseph & John Catholic Church as well as many other charitable organizations. Matt loved his music and prayer ministry where, for 20 years, he shared his faith and his time with many nursing home residents both in Strongsville, OH as well as Charlotte, NC. Matt always made a point of saying hello and giving a smile to everyone he met and never failed to see the good in everyone. Matt was preceded in death by Ann, his daughter Christine and his sister Mary. He is survived by his son Matthew (Michele Macedonio), Dr. Nancy Sokany (John Gallucci), Geralyn Cunningham (Gerald) and Stephen (Matthew Katz). Dearest grandfather/granddaddy of Katherine Macedonio (Jim Smetana), Morgan, Colin, Anna, Danny and Michael and great grandfather of Jett and Fiore. Matt was also the uncle and great uncle of many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Salesian Missions, 2 Leffere Lane, New Rochelle, NY 10801-5710 or Oblate Missions, P.O. Box 659439, San Antonio TX 78265-9769. Visitation will be held Friday, February 23rd from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jardine Funeral Home, 15822 Pearl Road, Strongsville, OH. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24th, at St. Joseph & John Catholic Church, 12700 Pearl Road, Strongsville, OH. Private burial at Ohio National Reserve Cemetery in Rittman, OH.
