Matthew Chmiel's Obituary
Matthew “Matt” Chmiel, 82, passed away on November 24th, 2022 at Southwest Residential Hospice in Strongsville, Ohio.
He was born on November 11th, 1940 to the late Raymond and Stella (nee Czaplicki) Chmiel in Toledo, Ohio. Following his school years, Matt joined the Navy. He was very proud of his military service and to be a Navy Veteran. Matt was a Toledo Police Officer for 33 years before his retirement in 1997.
When he returned home from the military, he married Mary (White) Chmiel in 1968. They had been married for 49 years before her passing in 2017. They enjoyed going out to eat together and would often travel to see their friends and family.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed being outdoors whether it was fishing or camping. He was very proud of his family and loved spending time with them. In his down time, you could often find him watching football and other sports on the television. He was an animal lover and had many animals through his lifetime.
Matt is survived by his children Laurie (John)Croft, Angie (Rob) Stoner, and Laurie Shrader; sister Janet (Danny) Junkins; and grandchildren Samantha and Abigail Croft, and Parker and Stella Stoner. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary.
A MEMORIAL MASS will be held on FRIDAY, December 9th, 2022 beginning at 10am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 16271 Pearl Road, Strongsville. Interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery where he will join his wife once again.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Wounded Warriors Project or Hospices Services of Southwest General Hospital, 18659 Drake Rd, Strongsville, OH 44136.
