Mary Alice Lewis' Obituary
Mary Alice Lewis (nee McColley), 97, passed away October 8, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Robert M. Lewis for 64 years. Loving mother of David A. Lewis (Caroline; nee Hill) and the late Gregory R. Sister of Ruth McColley Byrer and the late Clifford McColley. Daughter of the late Luther and Ilah McColley. Dear grandmother of Sarah Leach (Matt) and Amy Lewis. Great grandmother of Landon, Tyler, and Skyler.
Mary Alice grew up in Indiana on a family farm with her brother Clifford, and sister Ruth. She went to Ball State University and earned a 4-year degree in primary education. Mary Alice married her husband, Robert on August 19, 1944. Robert served in WWII and Mary Alice often sent letters to Bob while he was in the Philippines. At one point, her letters went unanswered. She feared for his life; she didn’t know Bob was recovering from Malaria and was unable to respond. When Bob returned, with the help from Mary Alice’s father, Luther, they built their home in Columbia Station, Ohio. They would go on to have their 2 sons, Gregory and David.
Mary Alice had an amazingly influential career as a 4th grade school teacher at Copopa Elementary School in Columbia Station, Ohio. Bob and Mary Alice were avid gardeners. They also had an exciting side business of restoring and selling antique goods and furniture. Their son, David, married Caroline Hill, and together they purchased the land next door and built a house. Son, Greg, passed away prior to Mary Alice. Mary Alice had her grandchildren, Amy and Sarah, growing up right next door to her! What a blessing!
Bob and Mary Alice were very social and would take turns having “card” parties at their house, where Mary Alice would make her famous “Sneaky Pete’s” mixed drinks. They would also vacation in Florida for 4 months out of the year. Mary Alice would often go “shelling”, finding amazing shells of all kinds. Many of these she turned into crafts – such as wreaths, and lamps. After Bob’s passing in 2008, Mary Alice went to live at Pearl Crossing in Strongsville, where she quickly became a friend to many. Family would often visit her, including her son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mary Alice touched the hearts of many and loved the Lord. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on December 30, 2018 after the church service at Columbia Methodist Church, 25453 Royalton Road, Columbia Station, OH 44028. We are all very thankful for how Mary Alice touched so many lives.
