Mom fostered in me a life-long love of the outdoors, birds, and antiques. Every time one of us would spot a pileated woodpecker (not a common occurrence), we'd call the other on the phone to excitedly talk about the sighting.
Whenever we'd go down to Pike Lake State Park (a VERY common occurrence), she'd take me antiquing into the local towns. At first I thought it was kind of dopey, but that quickly changed, and now I can't stay out of antique shops. When we weren't spending money on old stuff, we were driving in to Waverly to visit all of the relatives and hear the stories about the way life used to be. That's probably why I'm obsessed with old black and white movies too!
As Laurie and I grew up, mom and dad always made sure that the Saris house was the place to be when we were in high school and college. Even on holidays, all of our friends were welcome to stop by any time. Thanksgiving, Christmas...whenever.
Now it looks like it's up to me to help foster my appreciation of all things 'old' with MY kids so that they grow up with a healthy understanding of the way things used to be back in the 'olden days'.
Love you much, mom. Tell everyone I said "hi'...we'll meet again.
Your boy, John
