Lyle Slater's Obituary
Lyle Slater, 78, Harrodsburg, KY, husband of Shirley Green Slater, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at the UK Medical Center, Lexington, KY. Born June 4th, 1936 in Medina OH, he was the son of the late Edwin and Katherine Foky Slater. As a small boy, he lived in Brea, OH, and attended Saint Adalbert’s Church, and later moved to Strongsville, OH where he attended Strongsville Elementary, Strongsville High School and attended Saint Joseph’s Church. In1960, Shirley and Lyle were married at Saint Joseph’s Church, in Strongsville and then moved to Malibu, California where they lived for 45 years.
He was a dedicated Firefighter for the Beverly Hills Fire department for 30 years, a member of the California Firefighters Assoc., and he recently authored a book, Divine Thump, that chronicled his extraordinary experiences while serving as a firefighter.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Sierra Suzanne Jeanette Mittleman, Cold Spring Harbor, NY; one son, Marc Edwin Slater, Crockett, CA; one brother, Richard Slater, Medina, OH; two grandchildren, Alexander and Lila Mittleman.
A visitation will be held Monday, September 29th, 2014 from 3 PM to 7 PM at Jardine Funeral Home, in Strongsville, OH. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30th, 11 AM at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Berea, OH. Burial will follow a separate service in California at the Santa Barbara Cemetery Chapel, Santa Barbara, CA, Friday, Oct. 3, 2014,1:00 PM; with a Celebration of his Life to follow.
