38 years ago this wonderful lady taught me about structure, how to read a map, discipline, studying hard, and what being successful feels like when you've worked for it. When I found out she would be my fifth grade teacher, I dreaded the first day of school...by the winter holidays, I realized I loved this incredible lady.
Many people go into teaching to make a difference in a kid's life - few teachers do. This woman was the real deal. She made a difference and had an impact on me. She made sure she knew my mother, and I knew that anything I did in school good or bad - my mother would hear about it. My brother is 6 years younger than I (I almost wrote 'me' and I could hear her correcting me...) he was lucky enough to have her as his 5th grade teacher also. He dreaded 5th grade too - but also came to love and respect her for the excellent teacher and beautiful person she was.
When other teachers were lax in classroom structure and trying to be the students' friends, she kept clear boundaries - we respected her, worked hard for her, and at the end of the day we all grew to love her. I am so sorry I'm not there to say goodbye.
You made a difference Mrs. Bedford - I have remembered you always and will continue to do so. I pray that my grammar and spelling are correct in this tribute. I checked over my work three times, and even read it out loud just as you taught me. My sincere condolences to your family.
