Leona H. Kohoot's Obituary
Leona H. Kohoot, 97, was the 3rd of 6 children born to Joseph and Mary (nee Kandra) Kohoot on May 28, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio and passed away on May 10, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Irene Niece, Virginia Collins, Mary Gulan, and brother Joseph Kohoot; and loving companion, Ed Wallace. Leona graduated at the top of her class in the 10th grade on June 10, 1935 from St. Michael’s Commercial High School. During The Great Depression, she worked at her parent’s restaurant, was a waitress in a tea room and was a legal secretary. During the early 40’s, she assembled batteries for The U.S. Navy at National Carbon, a WWII Defense Plant. In the late 40’s, she worked for the V.A. on the G.I. Bill of Rights. She helped with 2 public laws on schooling during WWII and The Korean War (PL 346 and PL 550). From 1957-1978, she worked at The Ford Motor Company Engine Plant II in Cleveland, Ohio, as a computer programmer from accounts payable production control, and sales & distribution until she retired. Leona has been a resident of Strongsville, Ohio since 1971. She was very active attending local City Council meetings, was a Strongsville Election Poll worker for 20+ years, and a friend to many in The City of Strongsville. She volunteered as secretary for many years with The Ford Salary & Retiree Club. She lived independently in her Strongsville home until she became a resident of The Altenheim Senior Living Community in late 2012. Leona was an avid gardener, bird watcher, cook, played Bunco and crossword puzzles, sent and read e-mails on her computer and visited the Strongsville Branch of the CCPL system, averaged reading 3-5 large novels a week. Although she never married nor had children, she was a Great Aunt to many nieces, nephews, and their children. Leona is survived by her sister Rita Tomko (Harry); nieces and nephews, Robert Niece, Nita Niece, Christopher Collins, Linda Morris, Mark Kohoot, JoAnn McManus, Michelle Noga, Joseph Gulan, John Gulan, Carl Newman, Charlette Conn, and Michael Tomko.
