I first met John over sixty years ago when his brother, Paul, and I became college roommates. For over twenty five of those years, I would make the pilgrimage to Waldhütte (forest hut, as John's German-teaching father, Ted, named it) for an all guys long weekend (The Stag) with many friends and family members. It was at this event that John was at his best being the center of attention as host and raconteur telling every story and joke he had accumulated in his career as one of Campbell Soups top division sales managers. Another memorable experience was the trip to Paris John took in the late 1970's with Ted and Paul. I had occasion very recently to see the videos that John took on that trip. Included was the wine, baguette, cheese and pate lunch we had on the hood of my car in the middle of a French farm field and the side trip we took to see Monet's garden at Giverny about a month before it was opened to the public. To say that John was one-of-a-kind is an understatement. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.
