Jim Popovich's Obituary
The Family of James Thomas Popovich (Jim) is saddened to announce his death at 82 years of age on January 18, 2025 after a long and courageous health battle. Beloved husband of Sandra (nee Seedhouse), cherished father of Karen (Terre Morrison), Jeff (Deanna), and Debra (Ryan) Pastore and loving grandfather of four (Olivia, Claire, Riley, and Lillian). He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Caroline “Carrie” (nee Karkoski) Popovich, sister Catherine (Methodius) Likavec, and brother George (Dolores) Popovich.
He was known as Uncle Jimmy to the “Lakewood Popovich’s” Greg (Gailyn), Gerry (Catherine Dubber), Gary (Debra), and Donna (Jeff) Baller. Jim grew up with Catherine’s children (Matt, Thomas, David, and Janie Blades). He met Sandy, his wife of 57 years, at Brookpark Roller Rink, where they competitively skated. Years later, Saturday nights were spent bowling and playing
pinochle in Lakewood with the Popovich’s and Fiorilli’s (Bob and Bernice). Perogies were a common Christmas Eve dinner and generally involved the entire family in the hours of preparation and seemingly minutes of enjoyment. Jim took delight in planning vacations and he and Sandy cruised around the world as well as Lake Erie on the SanJim I, SanJim II, and SanJim III. Sunday dinners were a favorite with Earl and Jackie Seedhouse. He was a skilled craftsman as owner of Strongsville Upholstery and was an administrative officer of the Berea Power Squadron.
His quick wit and smile, joy when gardening in his yard, ability to lose at least one puzzle piece, appreciation for opera, ballet, and music, especially the 1980's song “Gloria” and any song by Neil Diamond, will long be remembered. He served as an Army’s Chaplain’s assistant while in Vietnam and often hit all the right chords when playing the Organ. Thank you to all the friends, families, and his Deer Path neighbors for the kindness, support, lending a helping hand in the yard and around the house, and the many dog walks.
He had a life well lived, adored his family, endured a tremendous health battle supported by the love and care of his wife, and will be deeply missed. Per his wishes, ALL SERVICES ARE PRIVATE, a mass of Christian Burial will be held for family with interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. Much appreciation to Fr. Peter Paul Ibeagha, Chaplain at Fairview General Hospital for the blessings and many conversations which brought peace to Jim over his last hospital stay. In lieu of flowers, please consider taking a vacation or a donation to an organization of your choice or the Berea Animal Shelter.
