My condolences to the family of Jack Berk. When I as a local union officer needed an interpreatation of the UTU Constitution, which is the Holy Grail to the union railroad worker, the UTU office in Cleveland would transfer you to Jack Berk. Be it how to run a fair union election, to who is eligible to just about every question you would ask he knew the answer, and you knew that there was authority in his voice that you had the right man to make certain that our union, the UTU would remain a place where everyone is equal. We all have lost a good man.##imported-begin##Rick Olson##imported-end##
To his family - I worked with Jack for many years at the UTU International Office and I often think about the great job he did of handling our members, never complaining of a call from someone he had to educate on our behalf. He had a way of leaving them satisfied even if they did not like his answer; and for this I always admired him.
Although I never met either wife or daughter, I recall him speaking lovingly of you both at work and of how happy he would be when his daughter graduated from Miami and was able to make a living as a teacher. He was very proud of you.
With my own son a college freshman, I certainly know that feeling as he is also an education major and living far away from us right now. I also know that you will miss Jack more than ever during this holiday season and I will keep you in my prayers. Our UTU family will miss him too. May God bless you and keep you. You can be certain that Jack has returned to his creator and is without the pain or physical limitations associated with his suffering.##imported-begin##John Nadalin##imported-end##
I have thought of Jack often especially in the past months. He was a gem of a guy, well respected with a wonderful sense of humor. I will never forget him walking Blackie down the street in front of our house or riding his bike. He always had something to say or some knowlege to impart. There was always a smile on his face and that is how I will remember him. My heartfelt condolences and Godspeed to my other daughter Becky and Peg, my good friends. Your Dad and Husband will be missed by all.##imported-begin##Robin Merry##imported-end##
