Mr. Hertel was an exceptionally dedicated teacher and a big influence on me becoming an engineer. He had a very practical style of teaching and didn't just teach out of the book or to the test. I am eternally grateful that I was able to learn from him in an era when talented teachers were able to make their own lesson plans. Thank you Mr. Hertel for sharing your knowledge and experience. And thank you to Mr. Hertel's family for sharing him with the hundreds of students who's lives he has enriched.
OMG I can't believe he's gone! He will live in my heart and memory forever!!! When I was 17 I was in Mr. Hertel's class, my dad was batteling cancer. Mr. Hertel told my sister and I to spend as much time with him as we could and to do special things that my dad liked. I will remember this message forever because that is what my sister and I did we made cookies for him and spent time with him. Later that year my Dad passed away and the quality time we spent with him was unforgettable. I never got to Thank Mr. Hertel because we graduated shortly after but that memory of him will never be forgotten! Thank you Mr. Hertel for helping to cherish the last moments I had with my Dad!
Mr. Hertel was one of my favorite teachers at SHS. I learned as much from him about life as I did physics (which was a lot). He had a real amazing, offbeat sense of humor, and he really cared about his students. A remarkable human being in every sense of the word, with amazing stories and life experience. I'll remember him forever.
Dad,
You were the best dad ever. Thanks for being such a caring Papa for Jaret, Aaron, Ali, and Ava. You were such a strong and intelligent man. Thanks for teaching me so much. Thanks for all of the great experiences. I am so proud and thankful to be your son. Hope you're riding that Harley in the sky. You are always with me in my heart. I love and miss you so much!
Your Loving Son,
Mark
