David John Oster's Obituary
David John Oster born to Stephen and Helen Oster on January 2, 1946, passed on to his next life on January 25, 2022, just after turning 76. Beloved husband of Sandy (nee Grollig) for 51 years; Loving father of Toby (Jennifer McMahon) Oster, and Stephanie (Ryan) Doherty; Cherished grandfather of Malorie, Kevin, Aria, Evianna, and Camden. Brother of Beatrice Sutton, Alice Jane Meder, and Robert Oster and his late siblings Raymond, William, Bro Thomas S.M., George, and James Oster.
Dave’s core values and essence were his family, his deep faith, service to others, the longing to learn and grow, and working hard. Every day he surrendered to his higher power and committed to be a faithful servant believing we were temporary stewards in this life and that we should take care of God’s belongings and God’s children.
He was active in his 12-step work and a clinical volunteer for the Cleveland Clinic Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center for over 25 years helping countless people.
Dave went to St. Eds and then Xavier University where he became the first member of his family to graduate from college. After college he served in the Army stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. He then continued his education and earned an MBA from Baldwin Wallace and started and successfully ran his own business at All Terrain Tire.
Dave loved Lake Erie and in the late 90’s he saw a diamond in the rough at Rye Beach and began purchasing properties to fix up and seasonally rent out. He became a board member and took on many projects to better the community and to protect Rye Beach and Park for the children who lived in the neighborhood.
Another passion of his was good food and breaking bread with people. He was an amazing cook who loved to feed others at family gatherings, retreats, and community events. He wouldn’t hesitate to rearrange whatever he was doing in order to make himself available to help family or a stranger, no matter the time or cost.
Though his life seemed cut short, and he never got to see his dream lake house foundation poured, his family is so proud the time he had on earth was not wasted, he poured a great “foundation” for his family and showed the important pillars to frame their own strong “house”.
