Boyd Mapstone's Obituary
Boyd E. Mapstone, age 90, retired Chairman of the Board, Cleveland Gear Co., passed away March 4, 2011. Born in South Fork, PA, he relocated to Cleveland in 1940. He entered military service (U.S. Army) in 1942 and served in the medical department for 3 years during WWII. Two years of this service were spent in North Africa, Italy and France. The hospital unit in which he served supported the invasion of Sicily, the Anzio Beachhead, the Italian Campaign (including Monte Cassion and Liberation of Rome) the invasion of southern France and the Rhineland Campaign. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern service medal and bronze service stars for the Rome-Arno and Rhineland Campaigns. He was awarded a field commission in Marselles, France February, 1945. He studied accounting at Fenn College (now Cleveland State University) and is a graduate of the Weatherhead school of Management at Case Western Reserve University. He was a certified public accountant and a lifetime member of both the Ohio society of CPA's and the American Institute of CPA's. He was employed at Eaton Corporation, beginning as controller of the Airflex Plant, then group controller of the Industrial Products Group and manager of Cleveland Gear. He became President and Chairman of the Board of Cleveland Gear Company. When the plant was sold in 1980, retiring from Cleveland Gear in 1986 he was a member of the Board of Trustees, St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland, Ohio; Board of Directors, American Gear Manufacturers Association, Washington, D.C.; The Advisory Council, School of Applied Science, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; Board of Trustees, Southwest Community Health Services Corporation, Southwest General Hospital; and Board of Trustees, Woodland East Community Organization, Cleveland, Ohio. He was a founding member of St. John Neumann Church, Strongsville, OH and served as chairman of the building fund campaign for construction of the church and for acquisition of the contiguous property. He was active in founding the parish finance council, as a member of the parish council and a number of other parish organizations. He was a founding member of the Ancient Acolytes (serving funerals) and was a minister of the Eucharist for many years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Adelle, Daughters Cathryn Ann Kader (Richard) of Strongsville, Mary Beth Brandt (Randall) of Union, KY, Debra Barnum (Michael) of Bay Village and son Timothy B. Mapstone, M.D. (Barbara) of Oklahoma City, OK. Grandfather of Sara Tsardoulias (Dimitri), Cathlin Ann Sentz (Adam), Lt. Michael T. Barnum, USMC, Todd Toedtman, Terre Strcic. Great Grandfather of Ashley Toedtman, Dylan Strcic, Alex Toedtman and Payton Kalucznyk. Visitation TUESDAY 4-8PM at JARDINE FUNERAL HOME, 15822 Pearl Rd, Strongsville.
